The Instituto Lula inaugurated at the end of 2015, the Memorial for Democracy, an on-line, multimedia museum about the history of the Brazilian democracy and the struggle of the Brazilian people for equality and social justice.
Aimed at preserving and recovering the national memory of these struggles, the Memorial for Democracy also caters to the younger generation through the use of simple, accessible language.
The Memorial exists because the Brazilian people has learnt over time that democracy is not granted, it has to be fought for and it is one the conquests of the Brazilian people that needs to be permanently defended and respected in order to guarantee that the voice of each and everyone can heard and that the interests of the majority are taken into account by the society.
The museum is being developed in stages, covering the whole of the Brazilian history – which is peppered with national and regional popular revolts – from the colonial times to the most recent, modern-day democratic period.
The fist stage, now available on-line through texts, images, recordings, press clippings, videos, documents, posters, pamphlets and other items, covers the most recent period of political and social struggle in our country.
a) 1964-1985: 21 Years of Resistance and Struggle
b) 1985-2002: Rebuilding democracy
In the next stage, the Memorial for Democracy will cover the important periods of the 20th and 21st centuries: 1930 to 1945 (Recognition of Basic Workers’ Rights and Nationalism), to 1945-1964 (Industrialization in a Democratic Period) and to 2002-2010 (consolidation of Democracy) .
After that we’ll delve into other eras such as the Old Republic (or First Republic from the end of th 19th century the 1930s), the Brazilian Empire (1822 through 1898) and the struggles against slavery, revolts and independence movements, resistance of the Indian population against the taking of their land, liberty, culture and the first years of the Colonial period the 16th and 17th centuries.
